North Queensland Calls You to a Winter Holiday in the Tropics.
This marvellous poster promoting North Queensland as a tourist destination features a man calling out from within a tropical landscape in the background. The original poster was created by Percival Albert Trompf in 1934, printed for Queensland Government Tourist Bureau by Frederick Phillips, Government Printer.
The charming beauty and lushness of the tropical rainforest are prominent features in North Queensland tourist promotional material from the 1890s onward. The tourist experience of the rainforest was typically conjured up and comfortable, the same as it is today. The natural attractions at Kuranda included the Barron Falls, the Barron River, and the Tropical Rainforest, examples of the magnificence of nature. The lavish tropical vegetation was admired by visitors. To get to the "Fairyland Tea-Gardens" visitors needed to cross the Barron River by boat, then walk along a trail laced with fern and orchid covered rainforest to a rustic thatched roof hut where tea and scones on white tablecloths was served.
