The 1939 Swiss Ski Race held in Unterwasser
The artwork for the original colour lithograph was created by Martin Peikert in the 1930's and printed by Eidenbenz-Seitz & Co. (St. Gallen). This stunning illustration promoted the 1939 Swiss Ski Race held in Unterwasser. The race was won by Karl Molitor from Wengen who had eleven victories and was the most successful skier in the more than 75-year history of the Lauberhorn races, also twice the medalist of the St. Moritz Olympic Games.
The artist, Martin Peikert was born in 1901 in Zug, Switzerland. He studied in Geneva at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and worked as an advertising illustrator until he graduated in 1921. Martin Peikert’s posters from the 1920's were Art Deco influenced and his tourism posters are unique and stunningly memorable.
